A cost-benefit analys conducted in Italy (Prof. Marangoni, Althesys 2011), based on the Italy's 2020 target for renewables, demonstrates that for each Euro spent on incentives, net benefits worth between 3 a 4 Euro are generated, based on:

• new jobs created
• GHG emissions avoided
• waste management costs avoided
• ancillary industries
• fuel-risk reduction
